Youth Bus Raises Awareness on Population Issues – From Aswan to Alexandria

Ministry of Youth and Sports and several governorates, join this year’s celebration of the National Population Day, world Population Day and International Youth Day with a 1,500 km long journey for the Youth Population Awareness Bus. Taking off from the southernmost historic City of Aswan on 3 August, the bus will travel north passing by nine governorates until it reaches the northernmost city of Alexandria on 12 August. The tour aims to emphasize the momentum created by the National Youth Conference that took place on 25 July under the auspices and presence of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sissi and where youth representatives gathered to discuss the country’s most pressing issues and their role in overcoming the challenges alongside top government officials and decision makers. Throughout the conference, the President reiterated that the most pressing challenge facing Egypt nowadays is the overgrowing population, the lack of adequate resources to cope with the dramatic increase and the dire need to revive the ‘golden age of family planning’. The start of this intensive joint campaign took place on 30 July with the National Population Day that was celebrated in the event organized by the Ministry of Health and Population and will conclude on August 12, International Youth Day.

UNFPA believes that young people, with the right education and empowerment, are powerful agents of change and progress in order to participate in decision-making. Yet around the world, too many youth are marginalized. They receive substandard education, or no education at all, and find few decent employment opportunities. They struggle to access basic reproductive health information and services. Without these tools, young people – young women, in particular – find themselves grappling with poverty, early pregnancy, disease and other challenges.

UNFPA’s new Strategic Plan 2018-2021 and Egypt Country Programme 2018-2022 will support investments in human development for adolescents and youth to ensure that they have the services, capabilities, and opportunities to define their futures, participate in their societies and communities, and access education, health, counselling and high-quality reproductive health services.

The main segment of awareness regarding population activities and stemming from its firm belief that young people in Egypt represent a unique demographic dividend if the right investments are made, the bus tour aims at shedding light on the most critical development challenges related to population growth Egypt faces, including early marriage, FGM, women empowerment and education amid collecting recommendations to solve these problems. Culture exchange among the youth representatives of the different governorates along the bus route will serve to enhance this experience and act as an informal, yet effective data gathering mechanism that will end up reaching the concerned decision makers upon conclusion of the tour. The bus tour will also be highlighting youth role and leadership in implementation of the National Population Strategy through the activities that will be conducted at each governorate like Peer education sessions and theatre performances on topics such as civic education/engagement, reproductive health, combating female genital mutilation and gender-based violence.
